Gotu Kola or Centella asiatica is a small herbaceous annual plant native to India, Sri Lanka, northern Australia, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, and other parts of Asia. It is used as a medicinal herb in Ayurvedic medicine, traditional African medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine. Botanical synonyms include Hydrocotyle asiatica L. and Trisanthus cochinchinensis.
From a gardening standpoint, Gotu Kolas are fast growing herbs, despite my tendancy to snatch and eat the nutty flavored leaves every time I walk past. They prefer wet feet and could even make suitable pond or next to the pond plants.
Don't start from seed. Gotu kola is actually somewhat difficult to start from seed. Remember, it is a pioneer successional plant, with seeds that may remain dormant in the soil for decades until the right conditions occur for germination. Find a small plant like this one instead.
When you buy a Gotu Kola plant, you will receive a Gotu Kola from a 4" pot, with the dirt carefully removed and shipped bare root.
